A new report by SBM Intelligence has revealed that floods and insecurity have devastated Nigeria’s agriculture sector, with over 180,000 farmlands destroyed and 100 million people now food insecure.
“Since July 2024, 31 of Nigeria’s 36 states have been inundated by floods, affecting approximately 1.2 million people,” the report stated.
It attributed the crisis to climate change, desertification, and violent insecurity, particularly in the Middle Belt, Northcentral, and Northwest regions.
The destruction of farmlands has led to a surge in food inflation, reaching 35.41% in January 2024.
The report also warned of worsening hunger, noting that 18.6 million Nigerians are facing acute food shortages, while over 2.2 million are displaced.
“Insecurity has disrupted agricultural productivity,” the report noted, urging a holistic response that includes security, peacebuilding, and climate action.
President Bola Tinubu has pledged federal aid after a Niger flood killed over 200 people and displaced thousands. Relief operations are ongoing.
