As of early May 2025, food prices in Nigeria have shown a mix of reductions and increases, offering some relief to consumers while highlighting ongoing challenges in the agricultural sector.

Food prices in Nigeria have seen both declines and increases as of early May 2025, offering partial relief to consumers amid persistent economic challenges. According to market reports, the cost of long-grain foreign rice has dropped to ₦82,000–₦85,000 per 50kg bag, while imported short-grain rice now sells for ₦65,000–₦67,000. Beans prices saw a sharp decline, with a 100kg bag of white beans selling for ₦88,000 in Kaduna.

Yam prices also fell due to new harvests, and palm oil now sells for ₦1,800 per litre in Benue. However, pepper prices surged to ₦2,500 per small basket.

Experts attribute the fluctuations to several factors, including inflation, fuel costs, and insecurity. “Banditry and farmer-herder clashes continue to affect agricultural productivity,” officials noted.

Despite some price reductions, inflation and currency depreciation maintain high living costs. Consumers are encouraged to buy in bulk where possible to manage expenses.
