Former nun Annastasia Kinse claims she was dismissed for reporting sexual harassment, but her congregation says she abandoned her vows and converted to Islam.

Former reverend sister Annastasia Kinse has alleged that she was unjustly dismissed from the Congregation of Mother of Perpetual Help of the Archangels Sisters after reporting a case of sexual harassment at Veritas University, Abuja. Kinse, 29, who hails from Plateau State and was the first nun from her village, said she joined the convent in 2015 and made her perpetual profession in 2023 before her dismissal in 2025.

According to her, the congregation accused her of abandoning her vows and converting to Islam a claim she insists was based on a misinterpreted Facebook post made “in frustration”. “It was not a renunciation of my faith. It was a cry of pain,” she said.

She alleged that after reporting her head of department for harassment, she was intimidated, subjected to a hostile disciplinary panel and later had her belongings thrown out of the convent. “Ten years of devotion… dismissed in an instant,” she said.

In an official statement, the congregation denied mistreatment, saying she “ceased to be a member” after defecting to Islam and was dismissed for “gross misconduct”.
