Former FBI Director James Comey is expected to be indicted in Virginia over allegations he lied to Congress about authorizing a leak, according to MSNBC.
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey is expected to be indicted in the Eastern District of Virginia in the coming days, MSNBC reported on Wednesday, citing three people familiar with the matter.
According to the report, the charges being prepared against Comey are not fully clear, but one possible count involves allegations that he lied to Congress during testimony on September 30, 2020. That testimony centered on whether he authorized the leak of information connected to the bureau’s handling of politically sensitive investigations.
“The full extent of the charges being prepared against Comey is unclear, but the sources believe that at least one element of the indictment—if it goes forward—will accuse him of lying to Congress during his testimony on September 30, 2020 about whether he authorized a leak of information,” an MSNBC reporter wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Comey, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2013 and later dismissed by President Donald Trump in 2017, has been a central figure in several high-profile political and legal controversies in recent years. His removal led to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
The Department of Justice has not commented on the report, and it remains unclear when or if an indictment will be formally announced.
