Four people remain critically injured after a vehicle drove into jubilant Liverpool FC fans during a Premier League celebration in the city centre.
Four people remain “very, very ill in hospital” after a vehicle rammed into a crowd of Liverpool fans celebrating the club’s Premier League title in Water Street, city metro mayor Steve Rotheram confirmed Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 6pm Monday, injuring about 50 people, including four children. A 53-year-old local man, believed to be the driver, was arrested. Merseyside Police are investigating the crash, which is not being treated as terrorism.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed national solidarity: “Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.”
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said he was “shocked and devastated,” adding, “You’ll never walk alone.”
Authorities cordoned off the area Tuesday, with forensic teams collecting evidence.
Rotheram raised concerns over how the car accessed the restricted parade zone. “Water Street was blocked off… how did a vehicle get through?” he asked.
Liverpool city council confirmed hostile vehicle mitigation measures were active.
Emergency responders rescued four people, including a child, trapped under the car.
