French prosecutors have opened an inquiry after Kick streamer Jean Pormanove, known as JP, reportedly died following days of on-stream abuse and sleep deprivation.
French authorities have launched an investigation into the death of popular Kick streamer Raphael Graven, known online as “Jean Pormanove” or “JP.”
Prosecutors said Graven, 46, died Monday in Contes, near Nice, after enduring “about 10 days of violence and sleep deprivation” during a live stream.
“Jean Pormanove was humiliated and mistreated for months live on the Kick platform,” said Clara Chappaz, France’s digital affairs minister, describing the incident as “an absolute horror.”
Social media footage allegedly showed JP being beaten and choked before the stream abruptly ended. Kick confirmed it is “urgently reviewing” the fatal circumstances and expressed condolences to his family.
Officials have called for tighter regulation of streaming platforms. “(Social media platforms) have an immense responsibility in regulating online content,” said Sarah El Hairy, France’s high commissioner for children.
JP had over 1 million followers and was known for extreme challenges.
