French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu resigned just 26 days into the role, amid fierce opposition to his cabinet.
France’s Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, resigned on Monday, hours after unveiling his new cabinet, the Elysée Palace announced.
The resignation followed a one-hour meeting with President Emmanuel Macron, throwing the government into fresh uncertainty less than a month after Lecornu’s appointment.
Lecornu, 38, was appointed prime minister only 26 days ago after the collapse of François Bayrou’s government. But his cabinet line-up, largely unchanged from Bayrou’s, drew fierce criticism from opposition parties in the National Assembly, many of whom threatened to vote it down.
The sudden exit deepens Macron’s political challenges, as he faces mounting pressure to restore stability.
