French lawmakers on Monday condemned Israel’s interception of the aid vessel Madleen, which was bound for the Gaza Strip, and demanded the immediate release of all detained activists.

Left-wing party France Unbowed (LFI) stated that the operation, which took place in international waters, was a “clear violation of international law.”

The British-flagged ship was carrying humanitarian aid, including food, medical supplies, and baby formula, when it was boarded and towed to Israel’s Ashdod Port.

The Greens (EELV) also denounced Israel’s actions, urging the French government, EU, and UN to mobilize international pressure.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition organized the mission, which departed from Catania, Italy, and carried 12 people, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and French MEP Rima Hassan.

Activists from Germany, France, Brazil, Türkiye, Spain, and the Netherlands were also on board, alongside a journalist from Al Jazeera Mubasher.

Organizers said the mission aimed to break Israel’s blockade on Gaza, where tens of thousands have been killed since October 2023.

“Detaining activists on the aid ship is a clear violation of international law,” France Unbowed said.
