French Prime Minister Gérald Lecornu resigned after only weeks in office, triggering a fresh leadership scramble for President Macron.

France’s Prime Minister Gérald Lecornu unexpectedly resigned Monday, less than a month after taking office, citing “personal reasons” in a letter to President Emmanuel Macron.

Lecornu took over following the fall of his predecessor and had struggled to establish a stable governing coalition. His departure deepens uncertainty in French politics and comes amid mounting pressure from factions within Macron’s own camp.

In his resignation letter, Lecornu wrote, “I remain convinced that this decision is in the interest of the country.” The Élysée Palace confirmed that Macron has accepted the resignation and will begin consulting on a replacement.

Analysts believe the next prime minister will need strong political credentials to manage internal divisions and to guide Macron’s agenda forward. The appointment is likely to reflect a balance between technocratic skills and political clout.
