As tensions rise between Israel and Iran, G7 leaders have urged both nations to de-escalate, affirming Israel’s right to self-defence and insisting Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, according to a draft statement.

The statement, seen ahead of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, also highlights concern for regional and market stability, including energy prices.

Fighting intensified Monday, marking the fourth day of conflict. Iranian missiles struck Israeli cities, while Israel retaliated by targeting a Tehran military base and the headquarters of Iran’s state broadcaster. An Israeli military spokesperson issued an evacuation alert in Tehran before the strikes.

Israel launched Operation Rising Lion on June 13, citing fears Iran was nearing nuclear capability. Iran, meanwhile, threatened to withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty, while claiming its nuclear programme remains peaceful.

“Iran has violated its NPT obligations,” the IAEA recently stated. According to The Wall Street Journal, Iran is now seeking talks with the U.S. and Israel via Arab intermediaries.
