Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran previously deported in error, has been returned to the U.S. to face charges of illegally transporting undocumented migrants.

A federal grand jury in Tennessee unsealed a two-count indictment on Friday, accusing Abrego Garcia, 29, of participating in a nearly decade-long conspiracy to smuggle thousands of noncitizens—including children—from Mexico and Central America into the U.S.

According to the indictment, he made over 100 trips from Texas to other U.S. states, receiving thousands of dollars in exchange. Sources told ABC News some of the migrants included MS-13 gang members. He is the only person charged in the case.

Attorney General Pam Bondi thanked El Salvador’s president for agreeing to his return. “He was a smuggler of humans, children, and women,” Bondi said. If convicted, Abrego Garcia could face life in prison. His attorney, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, said, “We’re fighting to ensure due process rights are protected for everyone. Because tomorrow, this could be any one of us.”
