Lagos firefighters contained a gas explosion and fuel spill on Sunday, preventing major disasters.
A gas explosion occurred on Sunday at Orisunmibare Market in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos State, but it was swiftly contained by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
According to the agency’s Director, Margaret Adeseye, the blast, reported around 2:13 p.m., originated from a gas retail outlet with multiple cylinders. “Swift responses from the Sari-Iganmu and Ilupeju Fire Stations brought the situation under control, preventing further escalation after several shops were affected,” she said.
Adeseye confirmed no fatalities, noting that one person sustained a minor hand injury. She added that “operations at the market have been concluded.”
In a separate incident, a 33,000-litre fuel tanker spilled along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway. Prompt intervention by the fire service prevented an explosion, with recovery operations continuing into Sunday evening.
