The real culprits are H. pylori infection and the overuse of drugs
Gastroenterologists have refuted the widespread belief that skipping meals causes peptic ulcers, stating that the condition is primarily triggered by Helicobacter pylori infection and excessive use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). While missing meals may aggravate existing symptoms, it is not a root cause.
Dr. Ganiyat Oyeleke, a Consultant Gastroenterologist, explained: “Not eating doesn’t cause ulcers. It may worsen the symptoms if the ulcer is already present, but the real culprits are H. pylori infection and the overuse of drugs like Alabukun, Feldene, and Diclofenac.”
She referenced research showing a high prevalence of H. pylori in duodenal ulcer cases and urged the public to avoid assumptions and self-medication. Dr. Muyiwa Bojuwoye also stressed that proper diagnosis through endoscopy is essential, cautioning against the misuse of common painkillers.
Doctors advised that while stress and spicy foods may irritate existing ulcers, they do not directly cause them.
