Cannabis remained the most consumed drug with 244 million users
A new global drug report reveals that in 2023, approximately 316 million people aged 15–64 used drugs, marking an increase from 5.2 per cent in 2013 to 6 per cent. Cannabis remains the most commonly used drug, with 244 million users, followed by opioids (61 million), amphetamines (30.7 million), cocaine (25 million), and ecstasy (21 million).
The report warns that transnational trafficking rings are expanding, taking advantage of global crises and vulnerable populations. It calls for strengthened prevention strategies, improved cross-border law enforcement, increased use of technology, and support for alternative livelihoods.
“We must invest in prevention and address the root causes of the drug trade… and take judicial action that targets key actors driving these networks,” said Ghada Waly.
The report highlights a 34 per cent rise in cocaine production, reaching a record 3,708 tonnes in 2023. Cocaine users grew from 17 million in 2013 to 25 million in 2023, with rising violence and overdoses in Europe.
