The United Nations has raised alarm over worsening hunger in 13 countries, naming Nigeria, Sudan, Gaza, and others as hotspots at risk of famine. In a report released Monday titled Hunger Hotspots, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) warned that conflict, economic shocks, and climate disasters are pushing millions toward starvation.

Gaza, Sudan, South Sudan, Haiti, and Mali are at highest risk, with the UN citing critical hunger levels. “Without funding and access, we cannot save lives,” said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain.

Nigeria was flagged as a country of very high concern due to conflict, inflation, and displacement. The UN warned millions there could face catastrophic hunger without urgent aid.

The report calls for increased funding, improved aid access, and agricultural resilience. FAO Director-General QU Dongyu stressed the importance of supporting food production amid crises. Some countries like Ethiopia and Kenya showed improvement.
