Global peace index: Nigeria among least peaceful Nations

Nigeria ranked 148th out of 163 nations in the 2025 Global Peace Index, reflecting worsening insecurity compared to other Sub-Saharan African countries.

Nigeria has been ranked 148th out of 163 countries in the 2025 Global Peace Index, placing behind conflict-torn nations such as Palestine, Iraq, and Pakistan. The index, released by the Institute of Economics and Peace in its 19th edition, measures the level of peacefulness in 163 independent states and territories, covering 99.7 percent of the world’s population.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria ranked 38th out of 44 countries, while Mauritius, Botswana, and Namibia led the region, also placing 26th, 43rd, and 50th globally. The report stated that “Sub-Saharan Africa recorded a deterioration in peacefulness, with the average score in the region deteriorating by 0.17 per cent over the past year.”

Globally, Iceland, Ireland, and New Zealand were ranked as the most peaceful, while Sudan, Ukraine, and Russia occupied the bottom positions. The report noted that the world “has become less peaceful” since 2008, with 94 countries recording deteriorations and only 66 showing improvements.
