From Kaduna, God drove us because I was sleeping.

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has claimed that divine intervention saved him and his associates during a tense escape from Kano in 2014. Speaking at the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation’s Annual Leadership Discourse in Lagos, Amaechi narrated how he was barred from leaving Kano by air after installing a new Emir, forcing him to embark on a risky road journey. According to him, the Department of State Services (DSS) had warned him to flee immediately, stating, “Oga, you must leave Kano now… I can’t account for your life.”

Amaechi revealed that after failed attempts to secure a flight, he drove out of Kano with former Governor Danjuma Goje, ex-PDP Chairman Abubakar Baraje, and Prof. Ibrahim Gambari as passengers. He recounted: “By the time I got to Zaria, I needed to ease myself… From Kaduna, God drove us because I was sleeping.” Despite consuming six cans of Red Bull to stay awake, Amaechi claimed he dozed off, only to wake up safely in Abuja.

The former Rivers governor described the ordeal as a miraculous deliverance, emphasizing his belief in divine protection. His account has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising his faith and others questioning the plausibility of the claim. Amaechi’s story underscores the political tensions of the time, marked by his strained relationship with the then-PDP-led federal government.
