The Google Cloud CTO, Grannis, highlighted the ongoing importance of foundational computer science skills amid the AI revolution. Speaking to Business Insider, he said, “You still have to understand, you know, how computers work, how data stores work,” noting that such knowledge helps design efficient and valuable systems. Despite AI tools automating parts of software engineering, Grannis urged job seekers to “lean into the education” provided by traditional computer science programs.
However, he stressed the need to adapt to new tools beyond formal curricula, describing how his global team will engage in “vibe coding” at an upcoming hackathon, using AI to generate, modify, and refine code. Grannis also introduced the concept of “context engineering,” emphasizing that it’s no longer enough to focus on prompts alone. Understanding the data, tools, and systems that multi-agent AI requires is crucial for future success. His advice aligns with other tech leaders who affirm that foundational skills remain vital in the AI era.
