Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri has formally resigned from the PDP, confirming his defection alongside key state assembly leaders after “extensive consultation.”

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of speculation about his political future.

Diri made the declaration on Wednesday during an expanded State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa, attended by Speaker Abraham Ingobere, Deputy Speaker Michael Ogbere, APGA minority leader Edward Brigidi, and seven other lawmakers.

A statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, said the decision followed “extensive consultation” with political leaders across the state.

“After extensive consultation, today, the 15th of October 2025, I wish to formally notify you that I, Governor Douye Diri, do hereby resign my membership of the PDP,” he said.

Ingobere expressed full support for the move, stating that 21 of the 24 lawmakers in the assembly backed the governor’s decision.

He described Diri’s defection as a unifying step for Bayelsa’s political structure.
