Governor Peter Mbah’s impending defection to the All Progressives Congress has divided Enugu State’s Peoples Democratic Party, with some members backing the move while others reject it outright.

The planned defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the All Progressives Congress has caused deep divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH showed that while some PDP leaders loyal to the governor welcomed the move, others vowed to remain in the opposition party.

The APC, which dissolved its Enugu State executive on Wednesday, inaugurated a caretaker committee to prepare for Mbah’s arrival.

Speaking after his swearing-in, APC caretaker chairman Dr Ben Nwoye said, “The governor is not coming alone. He is coming in with 260 ward councillors, 24 lawmakers, and the entire Exco.”

However, PDP Publicity Secretary, Chief Uchenna Obute, said, “Peter Mbah is our party. Wherever he goes, there we go,” though he noted that the governor had yet to officially inform the PDP leadership.

Former PDP National Auditor, Chief Ray Nnaji, dismissed the move, saying, “Those that will follow him to the APC won’t be up to 20 per cent. We will regroup and rebuild the party.”
