The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed on Friday that Israeli military strikes targeted Iran’s Natanz nuclear site, damaging above-ground facilities used for enriching uranium up to 60% purity. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told the UN Security Council that key power infrastructure was destroyed, while underground centrifuge halls may have sustained damage from the power loss. Iran also reported attacks near its Fordow and Esfahan nuclear facilities, though details remain unclear.
Grossi warned of radiological and chemical contamination inside the Natanz plant but noted no radiation leaks outside the facility.
He urged restraint, stating that nuclear sites should never be attacked due to potential risks to public safety and international security. Grossi affirmed the IAEA’s readiness to deploy safety experts and continue monitoring the situation.
He emphasized diplomacy as the only viable path forward and reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring nuclear energy remains used solely for peaceful purposes.
