Growing authoritarian trend alarming, Tinubu may seek third term – Deji Adeyanju alleges

”Tinubu is coming for everyone one by one, activists, artists, celebrities, etc. By the time he is done, nobody will have the guts to challenge him or his government. ”

Nigerian lawyer Deji Adeyanju has raised alarms about what he calls President Bola Tinubu’s increasing authoritarianism, suggesting it could lead to an unconstitutional third-term attempt. In a social media post, Adeyanju claimed the government is systematically targeting critics, citing the recent arrest of activist Martins Otse (VeryDarkMan) by the EFCC. “Tinubu is coming for everyone one by one… He might even attempt a 3rd term,” Adeyanju warned on X (formerly Twitter).

The EFCC maintains Otse’s arrest relates to financial crime petitions, but rights groups view it as part of a pattern of silencing dissent. Adeyanju criticized Nigerians who uncritically support leaders, stating: “Clowns who love praising politicians every 4yrs still think it all games and jokes.” The warning echoes past concerns about leaders extending tenure beyond constitutional limits.

While Nigeria’s constitution restricts presidents to two terms, Adeyanju’s comments reflect growing unease about civil liberties under Tinubu. The administration faces mounting scrutiny as arrests of government critics continue.
