Security forces have intensified the lockdown of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by extending roadblocks to peripheral entry points like Bwari, Zuba, and Nyanya, citing the need to screen for “external aggressors” amidst the ongoing Nnamdi Kanu protest and alleged coup plot fears, causing widespread traffic gridlock.

Combined security forces, including the Guards Brigade and the FCT Police Command, have extended roadblocks to the outskirts of Abuja, dramatically worsening traffic across major entry points. This development, intensifying the security lockdown over the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest led by Omoyele Sowore, caused heavy gridlock around the Bwari, Zuba, and Nyanya axes.

Initially confined to strategic areas like the Presidential Villa and National Assembly, the roadblocks now include areas like the War College Area in Ushafa, leaving many workers stranded.

A security source indicated the move was necessary to prevent “external aggressors” from infiltrating the capital, especially amid the alleged coup plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.
An official explained the rigorous screening: “Every motorist entering the City Centre is being screened now. This is to separate infiltrators from the genuine Nigerians and law-abiding citizens. We can’t afford to allow unrest in the seat of powers.”

A civil servant, Isaac Babalola, confirmed the congestion, stating he was “forced to return back home because of the traffic jam.” Motorists from the Mararaba-Nyanya axis also expressed frustration over the unexpected security blockade.
