A second deadly shooting near the Loon-Plage migrant camp in northern France left one person dead and two seriously injured on Sunday, police said, just a day after gunfire killed a 24-year-old Sudanese man and wounded five others.

No details about Sunday’s victims have been released. A police source confirmed both shootings occurred near the camp outside Dunkirk, where more than 1,500 people reside, many hoping to cross the Channel into Britain.

“All the victims in Saturday’s shooting were Sudanese nationals and one of the injured was a child,” a police source told AFP.

Authorities arrested two suspects Saturday: a 29-year-old claiming to be from Iraq and a 16-year-old from Afghanistan. The public prosecutor’s office said an investigation is underway for “murder and attempted murder by an organised gang.”

The violence comes amid record migrant deaths at sea. French officials report 78 deaths in 2024, the highest since crossings began in 2018.
