A gunman who killed four people at a Manhattan skyscraper was targeting the NFL headquarters but took the wrong elevator, Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday. Authorities say Shane Tamura, armed with an M4 rifle, opened fire in the building’s lobby, killing an off-duty NYPD officer, a woman, and two others.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura “killed a police officer working a corporate security detail,” then fatally shot others before going to the 33rd floor and killing one more person. He then took his own life.

Tamura left a note referencing the NFL and claiming he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), though the condition was never substantiated. The note said his brain should be studied after death, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

“He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,” Tisch said of Officer Didarul Islam, 36. “He died as he lived. A hero.”
