Gunmen killed three policemen at a checkpoint in Kogi State and ambushed a convoy in Zamfara, leaving five soldiers and ten villagers dead.
Gunmen have killed three police officers in Kogi State and five soldiers alongside ten villagers in Zamfara, authorities and residents confirmed on Thursday.
In Kogi’s Yagba West Local Government Area, heavily armed men attacked a police checkpoint along the Egbe-Okoloke Road around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, shooting three officers, two of whom died instantly while the third succumbed to injuries en route to hospital. “We woke up early Wednesday morning to the sound of heavy gunfire,” said resident Owolabi Yinka. Kogi police spokesperson SP William Aya stated, “Three of our officers on duty were killed today in Egbe…we are currently on the trail of the gunmen.”
Separately, bandits ambushed a convoy on the Lilo-Gulubba Road in Zamfara’s Gusau area Monday, killing five soldiers and ten traders despite troops’ resistance. “The soldiers fought back bravely in a heavy exchange of gunfire,” a survivor recounted. Community spokesman Mohammed Mohammed urged government action to improve security and infrastructure. Army media officer Captain David Adewusi said details would follow a full briefing.
