Armed attackers killed eight NSCDC operatives in Edo State, abducted Chinese workers for BUA Cement, and left one expatriate still missing after a rescue operation.

Gunmen killed eight operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and kidnapped Chinese expatriates in Edo State on Friday, the agency confirmed on Saturday.

NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale said the incident occurred when suspected armed kidnappers ambushed a convoy transporting Chinese nationals working with BUA Cement. “Four Chinese workers who were kidnapped were rescued but one was missing,” Babawale said. He added that four NSCDC personnel were also critically injured.

Nigeria has seen a surge in violent attacks, particularly in the north, where armed groups frequently abduct civilians for ransom. However, such kidnapping operations are increasingly spreading to southern states, raising fresh security concerns.

Authorities said efforts were underway to locate the missing Chinese worker and bring the perpetrators to justice.
