Israel received the remains of soldier Hadar Goldin, killed in 2014 and held in Gaza for 11 years. Netanyahu called it a relief for his grieving family.

TEL AVIV, Israel — The Red Cross received on Sunday the remains of an Israeli soldier held in Gaza for 11 years, Hamas said. The body, believed to be that of Hadar Goldin, killed in 2014, was discovered in a tunnel in Rafah on Saturday. Goldin was killed two hours after a ceasefire ended the 2014 war.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “The holding of the body for so long has caused great agony of his family, which will now be able to give him a Jewish burial.” His return marks a significant development in the U.S.-brokered truce.

Gila Gamliel, Israel’s Minister of Innovation, said, “There are agreements whose implementation is guaranteed by the mediators, and we shouldn’t allow anyone to… reopen the agreement.”

Leah Goldin described her pain: “Hadar is a soldier who went to combat and they abandoned him… our humanitarian rights were destroyed.”
