Dr. Yetunde Adeniyi, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, has warned that men over 40 are more likely to father children with autism.

Dr. Yetunde Adeniyi, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, has warned that men over 40 are more likely to father children with autism. “Men who are above 40, before having children, are more likely to have children with autism compared to those who father a child before 40 years,” she said in an interview.

Autism, a neuro-developmental disorder, affects speech, communication, and social interaction. Dr. Adeniyi explained that although its cause remains unknown, risk factors include genetics, environmental toxins, and complications during pregnancy.

She emphasized that autism is not a disease but a disorder, diagnosed through behavioural assessments rather than lab tests. Early signs include delayed speech, lack of eye contact, and repetitive behaviours.

While therapy remains the mainstay of treatment, many Nigerian children with autism lack access to education and support. Dr. Adeniyi called for inclusive policies and financial relief, saying, “There should be a welfare package for families who have children with autism.”
