Cooking gas prices surged to N25,000 as supply disruptions and high demand worsened the nationwide shortage.
The price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, has risen sharply to N25,000 from N17,500 last week, worsening the burden on Nigerian households. Vanguard’s market survey revealed that 1kg of cooking gas now sells for between N1,500 and N2,000, depending on location.
Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, NALPGAM, Mr. Bassey Essien, attributed the increase to supply disruption caused by the recent PENGASSAN strike. “The crisis involving PENGASSAN scuttled distribution. Many dealers could not replenish their stocks during the period,” he said.
Essien added that supply may stabilise soon following the resolution of the conflict. Meanwhile, several gas plants in Lagos and its environs shut down due to lack of supply. Dangote Refinery said it currently produces 2,000 tonnes of LPG daily and plans to boost output. NLNG also reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising domestic Butane supply for Nigerian homes.
