Senegalese-American singer Akon has spoken about how he contributed to the creation of the Afrobeats genre.

Senegalese-American star Akon has declared his contributions as foundational to the global Afrobeats movement, crediting his late-2000s collaborations with Nigerian artists for shaping the genre. In an interview with Sherri, the Konvict Muzik founder recalled signing Wizkid in 2008 and working with Banky W, P-Square, and D’banj: “What we created in Nigeria was what you see now as Afrobeats.” He highlighted producing the 2010 FIFA World Cup soundtrack as a springboard for these partnerships.

The singer’s remarks have sparked discussions about the genre’s evolution and key players.
