Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has revealed he would have eliminated petrol subsidy and floated the naira if elected, but criticized the current administration’s implementation approach.
In an Arise TV interview, Obi acknowledged the necessity to end subsidy “criminality” but questioned the management of savings: “Billions saved. Where is it invested in critical areas?” He emphasized his manifesto outlined a “gradual and organised” removal process, contrasting with the government’s “haphazard” execution.
The ex-Anambra governor argued currency floatation requires prior productivity boosts in agriculture and manufacturing. He noted no improvement in education, healthcare or poverty reduction despite subsidy removal promises.
