How Labubu doll craze is influencing fashion trends from Lagos to Beijing

The Labubu doll has become a fashion staple worldwide, with Nigerians joining the viral trend.

Originally a designer toy, Labubu is now a global accessory—styled on bags, homes, and runways.

The Labubu doll has sparked a global fashion phenomenon, with Nigerians also embracing the quirky accessory trend. Originally created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung and produced by China’s Pop Mart, the doll—rooted in Nordic mythology—has become a stylish add-on for bags, outfits, and home décor.

Popularised by K-pop star Lisa of BLACKPINK and other global celebrities, Labubu’s influence has spread across Asia, Europe, and North America. Though no Nigerian celebrities have joined the wave yet, local influencers like @lifestyle_ng and Angela Nwosu have flaunted their pricey purchases, sparking both admiration and mockery.

“I bought it for N260,000… Is this what I spent N260,000 to buy?” asked Kasibaby in a viral TikTok. Others have mocked the trend with humorous substitutions like ‘Shigidi’ dolls.

A recent BBC report revealed a 4ft Labubu sold for over $150,000 in Beijing. With more than 300 designs released since 2019, the designer toy is now a collectible symbol of pop-culture luxury.
