The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is embroiled in crisis after armed men allegedly linked to Seyi Tinubu, President Bola Tinubu’s son, disrupted the inauguration of newly-elected president Comrade Atiku Isa Abubakar at Abuja’s Wells Carlton Hotel. Former NANS Senate President Henry Okunomo accused security agencies of complicity, stating: “They were aware from the first abduction to the attack but failed to intervene,” referencing previous petitions filed by Abubakar. Okunomo dismissed claims of factionalism, asserting “NANS remains united under Abubakar’s legitimate leadership.”

The violence has raised alarms about political interference in student unionism, with Okunomo questioning Seyi Tinubu’s motives: “What’s his interest? He wasn’t a stakeholder or student here.” Warning that NANS risks losing its purpose, he added: “The president’s son has spent a year making the organization porous.” Student leaders now urge calm amid growing calls for security agencies to protect the union’s autonomy.
