As if mocking the opposition further, the President said he is optimistic about more defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
President Bola Tinubu dismissed opposition parties as “dead” and composed of “empty vessels” during his address at Thursday’s APC National Summit in Abuja. Mocking coalition efforts, he invited more defectors: “As many as are willing to join the APC fold are most welcome,” citing constitutional freedom of movement (Section 41) to justify recent high-profile crossovers.
His remarks followed April’s defection of Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, ex-Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other PDP stalwarts to the APC. Tinubu spoke under the summit theme “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far,” framing opposition weakness as proof of APC’s dominance amid Nigeria’s political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The President’s confidence was bolstered as all 22 Progressive Governors passed a vote of confidence in his administration. The declaration underscores APC’s consolidation strategy, leveraging defections to weaken rivals. Analysts view Tinubu’s rhetoric as both a taunt to struggling opposition groups and an open invitation for further political migrations.
