Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man wrongfully deported to El Salvador earlier this year, has surrendered to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man previously deported to El Salvador in violation of a court order, was taken into custody Monday after turning himself in to an ICE facility in Baltimore.
“Mr. Abrego Garcia was taken into custody by ICE this morning,” his attorney Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg said outside the facility.
Before surrendering, Abrego Garcia urged supporters at a rally to “continue to pray, continue to fight, resist and love, not just for me, but for everybody.”
The move comes as the Trump administration considers deporting him to Uganda despite a federal judge’s order allowing him to live and work in Maryland pending trial on federal charges in January.
Activists accuse the administration of “retaliating” against him for challenging his wrongful deportation. “They’re throwing the entire federal apparatus at one father of three,” said Lydia Walther-Rodriguez of CASA.
Abrego Garcia rejected a plea deal tied to deportation to Costa Rica.
