The revered monarch, who passed on July 13 at 91, was buried according to Islamic traditions—an action ICIR calls illegal and culturally offensive.
The International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR) has threatened legal action against the Ogun State Government and the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, over his burial rites.
The revered monarch, who passed on July 13 at 91, was buried according to Islamic traditions—an action ICIR calls illegal and culturally offensive.
Speaking at a press conference in Ibadan, ICIR President Dr. Fayemi Fakayode, represented by PRO Mr. Ayanladun Fajemisin and legal counsel Mr. Ifasola Opeodu, said: “This issue transcends a mere burial rite; it represents a challenge to the very fabric of our customs and traditions.”
Fakayode argued that the burial violated Part 8, Section 55, Sub-section ii of the Ogun State Chieftaincy Law, despite a prior court judgment reinforcing traditional rites for monarchs.
“We commend the Osugbo Confraternity… that is in fact a virtue that aligns with the noble teachings of Òrúnmìlà,” he added, while condemning the state for denying them access.
Opeodu further stated: “The actions of the family… and government constitute threat to the growth of democracy… and a state of anarchy.”
ICIR vowed to seek redress to protect Yoruba heritage and prevent future violations.
