“Kanu’s continued detention is of no advantage to the Federal Government. Political solution remains the only way out,” the elders said.
Igbo elders on Wednesday stormed the Abia Government House to demand the “immediate and unconditional release” of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Led by Chief Chukwuemeka Ezebuiro, the elders cited Kanu’s deteriorating health and rising insecurity in the region. They urged Governor Alex Otti to rally his South East counterparts to press President Bola Tinubu for a political solution. “Kanu’s continued detention is of no advantage to the Federal Government. Political solution remains the only way out,” they said.
Chief Chinedu Obilor added that if the government could dialogue with bandits, it should also consider negotiation in Kanu’s case. Governor Otti, represented by senior aides, assured the elders their grievances would be relayed to the presidency.
Meanwhile, diaspora group Ikenga Think-Tank, North America, decried worsening insecurity and accused Igbo elites of silence. In an open letter, it demanded Kanu’s release and warned: “Your deafening silence emboldens the perpetrators of this genocide… History will not remember you kindly.”
