Lionel Messi says he is excited about the 2026 World Cup but will only participate if he feels physically capable of contributing to Argentina’s success.
Inter Miami and Argentina forward, Lionel Messi, has shared his thoughts on a potential appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing enthusiasm but emphasizing that his participation depends on his physical readiness.
According to a report from PUNCH, Messi said, “I’m excited for the World Cup. But I don’t want to be a burden. I want to feel good physically, be sure that I can help and contribute things to the group. I will see day to day if I really feel good physically to be like I would like to be able to participate.”
Messi, who will turn 39 during the 2026 World Cup, led Argentina to their historic triumph in Qatar 2022, lifting the long-elusive trophy after several near misses in his illustrious career.
Since then, questions have persisted about whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will extend his international career to defend the title in North America.
Despite his move to Major League Soccer in 2023, Messi has maintained impressive form for Argentina in World Cup qualifiers, leaving the possibility of a final tournament appearance open.
For now, the forward remains focused on staying fit and contributing both to his club and the national team as he evaluates his readiness for 2026.
