The International Monetary Fund has said China, Mexico, and Canada are bearing the heaviest impact of US tariff increases. In a recent report, the IMF highlighted the growing trend of protectionism, warning that these policies are distorting trade and affecting global supply chains.
The report stated, “The pattern of tariff changes suggests that the measures have increasingly targeted geopolitical rivals.”
Since 2018, the US has steadily increased tariffs, particularly under policies aimed at reshaping trade relations and protecting domestic industries. The IMF noted that these actions have not only affected trade flows but also complicated international cooperation.
The institution urged a rollback of discriminatory tariffs and emphasized the need for open, rules-based trade.
