Imo workers have started receiving ₦104,000 as minimum wage, making the state the highest-paying in Nigeria.

The Imo State Government has commenced payment of the new ₦104,000 minimum wage to workers, fulfilling its pledge to review salaries upward.

PUNCH Online confirmed that employees received alerts reflecting the new structure, sparking excitement and gratitude towards Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Uzodimma had earlier approved ₦104,000 for fresh government workers, ₦513,000 for medical doctors, and ₦220,000 as entry salaries for lecturers in state-owned tertiary institutions.

With the implementation, Imo now tops the list of states paying above the national minimum wage of ₦70,000, ahead of Lagos (₦88,000), Rivers (₦85,000), and Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa (₦80,000 each).

According to the governor’s Special Adviser on Public Enlightenment, Prince Eze Ugochukwu, the policy will strengthen the state’s economy and improve workers’ welfare.

“The goal of this wage hike is to bolster the financial capacity of workers… giving a shot in the arm to local businesses,” Ugochukwu said.
