Implications of sexual abstinence

Regular sex increases levels of oxytocin and endorphins which make people feel happy and reduce stress

Abstaining from sex carries both health risks and benefits, experts say. Choosing to refrain from sexual activity may result in both emotional and physical changes. “Abstaining from s3x is a major step that has diverse effects on the human body both positive and negative the effects can be emotional or physical,” a health columnist noted.

Lower hormone levels may increase anxiety. Regular sex helps increase oxytocin and endorphins, hormones that promote happiness and relieve stress. Without sexual activity, the body may experience a drop in these hormones, potentially leading to heightened anxiety.

Other potential consequences include poorer heart and immune health. Studies show that individuals who have sex infrequently may be more prone to heart conditions and a weakened immune system due to lower levels of immunoglobulin A.

However, abstinence can also be beneficial. It eliminates the risk of sexually transmitted infections, supports personal or religious choices, and can provide space for emotional healing or reflection.
