The United States on Wednesday congratulated Nigeria on the occasion of its 65th independence anniversary, pledging renewed cooperation and partnership between the two countries.

In a statement issued in Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio lauded Nigeria’s resilience and leadership over the decades, describing the nation as “a beacon of resilience and leadership” with a rich cultural and entrepreneurial heritage.

“On this special occasion, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering determination of the Nigerian people,” Mr Rubio said.

He further assured that the U.S. would continue to strengthen bilateral relations. “We look forward to continuing to deepen our collaboration in the years ahead as we work together to achieve our shared goals,” he added.

Rubio also expressed optimism for Nigeria’s future, praying that the coming years would bring progress and prosperity to its citizens.

Nigeria and the U.S. share longstanding economic and diplomatic ties. Nigeria exports petroleum, rubber, and cocoa to the U.S., while importing refined petroleum, vehicles, and machinery.

Beyond trade, bilateral relations span oil and gas, agriculture, telecommunications, and peacekeeping cooperation, underscoring Nigeria’s role as a strategic partner in Africa.
