India surpasses China, ships 2.9 million iPhones to U.S. amid tariff war

As Apple pivots away from China, India is poised to supply up to 80% of U.S. iPhone demand by 2026.

Apple shipped 2.9 million iPhones to the U.S. from India in April 2025, marking a 76% year-on-year increase. In contrast, shipments from China fell 76% to 900,000 units, down from 3.7 million in April 2024. The shift reflects Apple’s strategy to diversify production amid rising U.S.-China tensions and trade tariffs.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “By the end of Q3 2025, concluding June 30, most iPhones would be made in India.”

In March, India accounted for 4.4 million of the 5 million iPhones produced locally. Between January and April 2025, 11.5 million iPhones were shipped from India to the U.S., compared to 13.2 million from China.

India’s rise is fueled by investments from Foxconn and Tata Electronics, along with support from the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Premium iPhone models, including the Pro and Pro Max, are now part of India’s output.

President Donald Trump criticized the overseas strategy, threatening a 25% tariff on non-U.S.-made iPhones.
