The Albanian Riviera, particularly the stretch between Ksamil and Sarande, has become a hotspot for tourists—but behind the pristine beaches lies a darker reality.
According to reports, criminal networks are using tourism as a front to launder money, aided by alleged government complicity.
A local source described how illicit funds are funneled into real estate: “The government clearly allows that – whether they think it’s a good idea to invest in tourism, infrastructure or just keep them in power. There’s a lot of money going into Albania that is primarily dirty.”
In the port city of Durres, customs officers have reportedly been discouraged from inspecting certain vehicles, allowing narcotics to be trafficked across borders. Meanwhile, the mayor of Himare was arrested in 2023 for allegedly forging documents to claim state land.
Despite this, tourism is thriving. Albania welcomed 11.7 million visitors in 2024. Even Jared Kushner plans a €1.4 billion luxury resort on Sazan Island. Still, critics say corruption is enabling crime, not Albanians. “Albanians are… the most generous, welcoming, nicest people,” one said.
