Investigation begins into Abuja–Kaduna train mishap, 21 injured

NSIB’s preliminary report on the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment outlines early findings and recommendations while a final investigation continues into the August incident that injured 21 passengers.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released a preliminary report on the August 26 Abuja–Kaduna train derailment, which injured 21 passengers but caused no fatalities. According to the bureau, the incident involved train number AK 1, operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) with locomotive CDD5c2 2701, and occurred at Km 49 of the Kubwa–Asham section in Kagarko Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

The report stated that the passenger train departed Idu Station, Abuja, at 9:45 a.m. with 618 people onboard and derailed at about 11:09 a.m., shortly after passing a manually operated switch point at Asham Station. “Initial findings and recommendations are contained in the preliminary report, which is available for download on the NSIB website,” said Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, NSIB Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance. She added that the final report will provide detailed conclusions and further safety recommendations. Investigators are expected to examine track conditions, speed, and mechanical factors.
