A meeting of Ipetumodu princes ended in chaos after disagreement over calls for Governor Ademola Adeleke to declare the Apetumodu throne vacant following Oba Joseph Oloyede’s U.S. conviction.
Tension erupted Tuesday during a meeting of princes in Ipetumodu, Osun State, as calls mounted for Governor Ademola Adeleke to declare the Apetumodu stool vacant following the conviction of Oba Joseph Oloyede in the United States.
Oba Oloyede, the 27th Apetumodu, was sentenced to over four years in prison and ordered to pay $4.4 million restitution for COVID-19 loan fraud.
The meeting, presided over by the Asalu of Ipetumodu, Chief Sunday Adedeji, broke down after he refused a request to formally notify the governor of a vacancy. His rejection triggered a shouting match, forcing the gathering to end abruptly.
Prince Olaboye Ayoola of the Aribile Ruling House said: “We all decided that two new kingmakers should be elected and a letter written to the governor declaring the seat vacant. But Chief Adedeji refused… That led to chaos.”
State officials said they await a Certified True Copy of the U.S. judgment before taking further action.
