Iran announces major shift in nuclear policy

Iran reaffirms commitment to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty despite watchdog ban.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered the suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), following airstrikes by the United States and Israel on key nuclear facilities. The directive, recently approved by Iran’s parliament, mandates that any future IAEA inspections must receive approval from the Supreme National Security Council.

Iran’s Foreign Minister stated that the Fordow enrichment site sustained “severe damage” during the recent airstrike. Despite halting international oversight, Iranian authorities insist the country remains committed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

The decision has drawn criticism from Israel, which urged for the reimposition of sanctions under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal. Analysts warn that the move complicates efforts to verify Iran’s uranium enrichment levels, which have reportedly reached near-weapons-grade.

Though Iranian officials express willingness to resume diplomatic dialogue, ongoing tensions and military confrontations have stalled any progress toward renewed negotiations.
