Iranian state TV calls for WhatsApp deletion, sparking fears of impending nationwide ban

IRIB alleged WhatsApp collects users’ “last known locations and communications” and transfers them to Israel.

Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB has urged citizens to delete WhatsApp, claiming the app shares personal data with Israel. The call comes amid escalating conflict between the two nations, now in its sixth day of direct fire exchanges.

IRIB alleged WhatsApp collects users’ “last known locations and communications” and transfers them to Israel. In response, a WhatsApp spokesperson said, “We’re concerned these false reports will be used as an excuse to block our services at a time when people need them most.” The company reaffirmed its messages are “end-to-end encrypted” and said it does not track user locations or provide bulk information to governments.

Following Tehran’s announcement of temporary internet restrictions during the conflict, several apps have become inaccessible. Civil servants and their security teams have also been barred from using connected devices during the Israeli air offensive.

Iran previously banned WhatsApp during the 2022 protests over Mahsa Amini’s death.
