Despite his links to Iran-backed political factions, al-Sudani wants closer ties with the Trump administration, seeking economic investment in oil, gas, and artificial intelligence.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has said he’s working to deepen ties with the United States while keeping Iran-aligned militias in check amid regional tensions.
In an interview with the Associated Press, al-Sudani revealed that Iraq thwarted 29 missile and drone attacks by armed groups after Israel struck Iran. “We made sure not to give any justification to any party to target Iraq,” he said.
Despite his links to Iran-backed political factions, al-Sudani wants closer ties with the Trump administration, seeking economic investment in oil, gas, and artificial intelligence.
He defended a bill integrating Iran-linked Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) into the Iraqi military, saying, “Security agencies must operate under laws and be subject to them.”
Al-Sudani also condemned recent drone attacks in northern Iraq as “terrorist acts” and vowed action.
Regarding Israeli-Russian researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, missing since 2023, he stated, “We do not negotiate with gangs and kidnappers,” but confirmed his team is pursuing her release through political channels.
